Every year, Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club hosts its annual Play for Hunger charity event to help raise funds for the St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Daystar Life Center. In 2016, the GirlFriends, a women’s organization within Isla Del Sol, decided to hold its first “Unmentionables Drive” for the Free Clinic’s Virginia and David Baldwin Women’s Residence.
The Women’s Residence, which provides a safe place for women to live while they develop the skills necessary for independent living, often has women who need undergarments, such as panties and bras.
The Yacht Club at Isla Del Sol and the GirlFriends group has helped meet these needs over the past two years, and they wanted to keep the momentum. This year, a barrel was designed for donations and a contest was started to see who could donate the most undergarments. One member and her husband spent $500 to purchase needed items to donate to the Women’s Residence. The drive was also extended to meet other needs including umbrellas, towels, twin comforters, nightwear and more.
The members of Isla Del Sol and the GirlFriends organization have gone above and beyond to help the women in the Women’s Residence.
